MODERN ENTOMOLOGY covers over-all undergraduate and post- graduate entomology syllabi of the agricultural and non- agricultural universities in India. This book deals with the fundamentals of entomology. The book consists of 28 chapters, the first 14 devoted to the section Insect Structure and Function and next 14 to the section Classification of insects. The First section Insect Structure and Function incorporates structure of the integument, head, thorax, abdomen and their appendages, particularly, the mouthparts, legs, wings, external genitalia and internal systems, sense organs, effector organs, endocrine and exocrine organs, mechanism of chitin synthesis, moulting and metamorphosis, sclerotization, head segmentation, feeding, walking, flight, digestion, tracheal, gill and plastron respiration, haemolymph circulation, intermediary metabolism, osmoregulation, excretion, neuro-coordination, image formation, mechano- and chemoreception, atogenesis, vitellogenesis, chorion synthesis, early and post embryonic development, endocrine control of the development, reproduction, diapause, intermediary metabolism, osmoregulation and pheromonal activity as well asvarious biochemical and molecular aspects of the insect biology, types of Reproduction in Insects, types of Larvae and Pupae, Insect Development and Molting. The second section Classification of Insects includes a brief survey of the various schemes of classification, distribution of insect fauna, extinct insects and detail description of all 29 orders of the living insects. The insect fauna represents about 80% of the animal kingdom and insect taxonomy is, therefore very exhaustive but it is presented in such a style that it becomes lucid, illustrative, practical and easy to understand. This book will, certainly cater to all the expectations of the teachers and students offering Entomology in Zoology, Agriculture, Forestry and other related disciplines.
