Much has been written on the doctor-patient relationship in the Western scientific canon. While I do take some of these studies into consideration in this book, I mostly rely on Eastern thought-especially Ayurveda-to guide this exploration. I have made an effort to include important passages from Ayurvedic texts that pertain to the subjects in this book, as well as directives from my guru to me, in order to ground this discussion in true authority. More about authority later. For areas in which I have less experience, I have turned to the counsel and experience of practitioners with more extensive training and background. God willing, the insights and explorations in these pages will resonate with and support good medicine, or trigger conversations or insights of equal or greater value.
