    Description

Regency Publications Faith and Hope Christian Missions and Churches in North East India 2025 by David R Syiemlieh

Faith and Hope: Christian Missions and Churches in North East India emerge from the 3rd J.B. Bhattacharjee Endowment Lecture at the Institute of Northeast India Studies, Kolkata, in January 2019. The book commences with an overview of North East India. This is followed with a study of the earliest connections of Christianity in the region with the Portuguese. The discussion then makes note of the early establishment of different Protestant and Catholic missions, with some detail of their contribution to education and medical service, with sections on the official attitude to missions, the 'Comity agreements', the transition from mission mode to established churches, indigenous churches and the efforts at church unity. The narrative covers a fairly long span in time from the 1 6th century to the present. The account does not purport to be a detailed history of Christianity in the North East. The bibliography lists the libraries and archives consulted and the books referred to in the text. It has not been possible in the book to go into any detail of the denominational history of Christianity in the North East as this has been presented by several authors in the publication of many books on mission and church history in the region.
