Astral Publishing Exotic Vegetables of India Their Cultivation and Pest Management by Geetika Malik
This book is about vegetable crops, which are not of Indian origin but are becoming increasingly popular after their introduction from elsewhere in the world. We call such crops exotic. At present, the most popular exotic vegetables in India are red and yellow capsicums, broccoli, lettuce, celery, parsley, red cabbage and Chinese cabbage among others. Not being in mainstream agriculture, they are grown by progressive farmers, private seed companies, nurseries and backyard gardeners for high remuneration, recreation and diversification of food. It is very difficult to ascertain the time and mode of introduction of exotic crops to the country, however, their popularity is quite apparent. Gradually, public sector like ICAR and agricultural universities has also started researching in these crops for their introduction, breeding and genetic improvement to suit Indian climate and consumers.
