    Description

Routledge Taylor and Francis group Ethnomedicinal Plants Revitalization Of Traditional Knowledge Of Herbs (Hb) by Rai

Interest in ethnomedicine is growing globally. It is expected that new ethnopharmacological studies and reviews will further bolster scientific interest in ethnomedicine, leading to an increase in its therapeutic potential in healthcare and medicine. This book presents recent information on ethnomedicinal plants around the world with the aim of revitalizing the traditional knowledge of herbs and their medicinal uses. The editors focus on evaluating the progress to date as well as the future of drug development in ethnomedicine. They include eight reviews examining various therapeutic aspects such as the spasmolitic effects of various plants, the anti-inflammatory activity of plants from Brazil and Tunisia, common fertility treatments in Trinidad and Tobago, traditional medicines from Cameroon and their interaction with estrogen receptors, the medicinal plants used in Spain to treat digestion problems, immune-modulators and stimulators from plants, and antimicrobial herbs from India. Subsequent chapters review the species Woodfordia fruticosa, Azadirachta indica, Quassia amara and related plants used in folk medicine, and the use of smoke in traditional Brazilian healing ceremonies, while other chapters deal with polyunsaturated fatty acids occurring in medicinal plants as well as the conservation strategies for ethnomedicinal plants. Finally, two chapters focus on combining ethnobotany and informatics with the second delving into possible applications of microarray technology. This book will be of interest to researchers in ethnomedicine, pharmacognosy, ethnopharmacology, and ethnobotany, as well as for all those interested in medicinal plants and natural therapies.
