    Description

Manohar A History of Assam 2024 by Edward Albert Gait

The northeastern region of India has a rich history, and Assam, in particular, has a distinct historical narrative. As Assam is often referred to as the ‘gateway to the northeastern states’, it holds a unique place in the region’s history and memory. This book provides a comprehensive history of Assam, spanning from the prehistoric era to the emergence of British rule. It covers the Stone Age, the traditional periods, and extends through the Vedic age, including the renowned Kamarupa kingdom from the fourth to the twelfth centuries ce. The volume also explores the notable Ahom and Koch kingdoms, as well as other kingdoms such as Jaintia, Manipuri, and Sylheti. It addresses themes such as the invasion of Muslim Sultanates, the decay and decline of the Ahom kingdom, the consolidation and expansion of the British Empire, the Anglo-Burmese War and its impact on Assam, and concludes with the emergence of the tea economy under British rule. About the Author Sir Edward Albert Gait (1863-1950) was a former ICS officer and served as the Lieutenant Governor of the Bihar and Orissa Province in the Bengal Presidency. He was a recipient of the Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire (CIE) and Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India (KCSI). Gait established the Bihar and Orissa Society in 1915 and authored several important works, including the Manual of Local Rules and Orders under Enactments Applying to Assam; North Eastern India (Geography, Archaeology, Forests, Flora, Religion, and Races); and The Assam Immigration Manual.
